Roles
Last Update:
In Thingspod, the ability to limit user access levels is done by roles. Roles can be defined in two ways: Generic roles or Group roles.
Generic roles
In generic roles, different roles can be defined to define user access levels to available resources and operations:
- From the main menu on the left side of the page, click on the Roles section.
- Click on the + icon in the upper right corner of the screen.
- Choose a name for the role and set the role type to Generic. Then, click on Permissions and click Add.
- In the Select Resource section, you must select the resources you want the user to access.
- In the Enter Operations section, you must select the operations that you want the user to be able to perform.
- Click the Add button to create your role.
For example, we want to define a role in our tenant that users can only access device groups and can create and delete devices. You must select the Device Groups option in the Select Resource section and select the Create and Delete operations in the Enter Operations section.
To connect this role to the user group, you must:
- Enter the user group page.
- After selecting the user group, click on it.
- In the opened window, go to the Roles tab and add your role by clicking the + icon. Set the role type to Generic and then select the role name from the drop-down menu and click Add.
Now, every user added to your user group has this access level restriction.
Group roles
In group roles, you can only limit the access level of users to perform operations, and the type of resources to which this restriction is applied can be determined individually for each user group through the settings of the same section.
To create a group role:
- From the main menu on the left side of the page, click on the Roles.
- In the upper right corner of the screen, click the + icon.
- Choose a name for the role and set the role type to Group mode. Then, click on Permissions and select the operation you want the user to be able to perform from the Operation drop-down menu.
To connect this role to the user group, you must:
- Enter the user group page.
- After selecting the user group, click on it.
- In the opened window, go to the Roles tab and add your role by clicking the + icon.
- Set the role type to Group mode and then select the role name from the drop-down menu. Also, in this section, you must specify the type of entity group and its name to apply restrictions.
Now, every user added to your user group has this access level restriction.
